Seattle-based Getty has unveiled some of its most amazing shots from the past 20 years today, and it’s well worth a look.
Called the Legacy Collection, the set of images has been “expertly curated” to include Getty’s library of the most “groundbreaking, significant and memorable” photos it has, including iconic moments in sports, entertainment and history.
To create the collection of 200 iconic images, Getty had to cull it down from nearly 200 million assets.
Released in weekly batches of 15-20 images via the Getty Images app, you can view history as Getty photographers captured it, with some behind-the-scenes footage and interviews added to the app.
This week’s set includes Michael Jordan, Jackie O and Muhammad Ali for starters. Major world events are also represented with photographs, including 9/11, Katrina’s aftermath in New Orleans and protests in Ferguson, Mo.
Getty has long been known as one of the greatest image agencies in the business among media, photographers and agencies worldwide, and serves companies in 100 countries.
As we’ve reported, the photo giant has unleashed some nifty digital tools — even those for the masses — including Photos.com, which offers iconic art for sale, and also allowing some photo embeds on non-commercial websites and blogs.
Earlier this year, CEO Jonathan Klein stepped down but will still play a role in the company as it continues to develop new plans for consumers in the digital age.
If you love brilliant photography and powerful pictures of major world events, there are some real conversation pieces here. And, as Getty intended, this collection is an incredible look back at how images can capture, shape and share history.
