The memories came flooding back for Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as he visited the dorm where he lived during his time at Harvard University. Naturally, he streamed his entire visit to Kirkland House H33 in Cambridge, Mass., live on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.
With his wife Priscilla Chan joining him, Zuckerberg marveled his followers with tales of “jamming on code” until 5 a.m. and the dude across the hall who would steal his last Hot Pockets sandwich.
After entering the room, Zuckerberg flips the camera to show off the layout of the space, which features a small desk and a couple beds. There’s even a “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” poster above the desk. “That is not my poster and I would not have had a poster that cool,” Zuckerberg said of the space where he sat with his “little laptop” while coding Facebook in February of 2004. “This is where it happened.”
Chan at one point spread her arms to demonstrate how narrow a hallway was in the space. “It’s about one pregnant woman wide,” Zuckerberg said of his wife, who is expecting the couple’s second child.
Seated in typical dorm room furniture, Zuckerberg and Chan also visited with young students who are temporarily staying in the building. Zuckerberg talked about his early days of building social websites. He was able to retain a good deal of what went on despite the fact that he dropped out of Harvard during his sophomore year and moved to California to continue building Facebook.
He said it was his first time being back in the dorm since leaving 13 years ago. Zuckerberg is delivering the commencement address and receiving an honorary degree on Thursday. He said it might be the thing his parents will be most proud of him for.
