The Empire State Building in New York City has been bathed in light to celebrate everything from the Fourth of July to another Yankees championship. On Tuesday the iconic landmark was bathed in orange light to celebrate New York’s victory in the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes.
It didn’t go so well on Twitter.

While New York’s Long Island City and Virginia’s (new) National Landing neighborhoods beat out the rest of North America by landing a share of the tech giant’s long-awaited prize, the shine was wearing off in the Big Apple long before darkness fell on the Empire State Building.
Rumblings about how much New York gave up in incentives to lure Amazon were echoing across social media and politicians from Congress to the State Legislature to the borough of Queens were threatening to wreck the party.
In the replies to the tweet showing off the glowing skyscraper, New Yorkers angry over the green being spent on Amazon instead of the city’s failing subway system, for instance, were left seeing red more than a delightful “orange sparkle.”
