Amazon says it owns 5.2% of Aurora Innovations, the Pittsburgh-based self-driving vehicle technology company that went public in November through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger.
The Seattle-based tech giant disclosed the Aurora stake in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Wednesday afternoon. Amazon first invested in Aurora in February 2019. Uber took a 26% stake in Aurora when it sold its self-driving car unit to the company in December 2020.
Amazon’s stake in Aurora is part of a broader set of investments in transportation companies. In separate filings Wednesday afternoon:
- Amazon said it owns 20% of Air Transport Services Group, which operates dozens of the company’s cargo planes. Amazon first invested in Air Transport in March 2021.
- The company put its stake in electric cargo vehicle maker Rivian Automotive at 18.1%. The company had previously disclosed its stake in Rivian to be “approximately 20% ownership interest.”
Amazon has ordered 100,000 electric vehicles from Rivian for package deliveries.
