Clarivate, a publicly traded software giant based in London, acquired Rowan TELS Corp., the software maker behind patent drafting application Rowan Patents.
- Rowan’s software helps legal professionals automate the patent drafting process. Clarivate sells a number of software tools, including for intellectual property use cases.
- Former Intellectual Ventures vice president John Amster launched Rowan in 2018. A year later, Rowan merged with TurboPatent, a Seattle startup co-founded by tech veteran Jim Ballmaier and backed by Voyager Capital and other Seattle-area investors.
- Bill McAleer, managing director at Voyager, called the acquisition by Clarivate a “positive outcome.”
- A small development team for Rowan will continue working out of Seattle, according to a Clarivate spokesperson.
